Flock Safety CEO Calls for Balance as Surveillance Tech Faces Privacy Concerns

View original source

Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley has recently emphasized the need for a balance between privacy and safety in light of public concerns over the misuse of the company's surveillance technology. In an interview with Fox News, Langley stated that the priority should be a compromise between these two aspects.

The debate has intensified with reports from The Washington Post of 46 cases where police officers allegedly used Flock technology improperly, including stalking personal acquaintances. Langley offered an apology while defending the company's position, stating, "I don’t think that Flock created police abuse."

  • The issue has become politically charged, drawing criticism from both parties:
    • Democratic politicians like Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and Senator Bernie Sanders have criticized the proliferation of such surveillance.
    • On the Republican side, a bill introduced by three House Republicans seeks to limit federal acquisition of surveillance systems, targeting technologies used by Flock.

Flock has initiated policy changes like reducing data retention time and requiring case codes for data access, but concerns remain over possible override capabilities.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) acknowledged the changes as a potential improvement but stressed more was needed. Langley advocates for regulation and accountability in the use of surveillance technologies and is expected to discuss these issues further at the upcoming TechCrunch Disrupt conference.
