Google Imposes New App Requirements Amid Memory Chip Shortages

View original source

Google is implementing changes to its Android app requirements in response to industry-wide memory chip shortages, driven by a surge in AI data center demands. This week, Google announced two major updates:

  • Memory Usage and Optimization: To combat "significant hardware supply constraints" affecting device memory, Google is setting new performance thresholds for dynamic memory and bitmap usage. Developers are given until February 2027 to comply with these changes. New tools will be provided to alert and guide developers when memory thresholds are exceeded, aimed at preventing app slowdowns and crashes.
  • Zero Tap Sign-In Requirement: By April 2027, all Play Store apps must adhere to the Zero Tap Sign-In standard, which ensures seamless user sign-ins between Android devices via the Android Restore Credentials API. This measure is intended to maintain app usability and user experience, even amidst lower memory availability in devices, especially affordable ones.
