Music Publishers Sue Anthropic in Landmark AI Copyright Case

View original source

In a significant legal development, Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, and other music publishers have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, an AI company co-founded by Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann. The suit alleges that Anthropic engaged in a 'brazen campaign' of illegally obtaining and using copyrighted works by torrenting, scraping, and downloading them to train its AI model, known as Claude.

  • Lawsuit Details: Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit was first reported by Music Business Worldwide.
  • Allegations: The publishers claim Anthropic committed 'blatant theft' of thousands of copyrighted works.
  • Previous Lawsuits: Anthropic faces repeat allegations, having previously been involved in intellectual property litigation this year with Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group, and settled another high-profile case, the Bartz case, for $1.5 billion.
  • Key Differences: This lawsuit is broader, accusing Anthropic of using illegal torrenting to obtain millions of copies, including books, lyrics, and sheet music.

Anthropic has not yet responded to requests for comment prior to publication.
