UN and Google Collaborate to Make Global Statistics AI-Ready and Accessible

The United Nations (UN) has announced a collaboration with Google to enhance access to global statistics through a platform called the UN System Data Commons. This system, built on Google's open-source Data Commons platform, allows users to search statistics from various UN agencies using natural-language queries. Key points of the initiative include:

  • Connection to AI Technologies: The platform supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables AI systems to directly access external data sources. This responds to a growing demand for reliable, authoritative data in AI tools, as demonstrated by a recent UNICEF study testing AI models' accuracy in providing global development statistics.
  • Enhancing AI Accuracy: Current AI models showed an average accuracy of just 21.2% in interpreting global indicators, highlighting the need for improved data sourcing, which the Data Commons aims to address. UNICEF reported a significant increase in visits from AI-generated traffic, showing a 67% year-on-year growth.
  • Widespread Adoption: Presently, 26 UN entities have committed to using the Data Commons, with data from nearly 20 available initially. The goal is to have 80% of the UN's statistical datasets on the platform by 2027.
  • Google's Role: Google has provided $2 million in funding and technical support. The platform is being developed with a 'train-the-trainer' approach for sustainable, independent maintenance by the UN.

Shantanu Mukherjee, acting director of the UN Statistics Division, emphasized that the initiative marks a major advancement in integrating data systems across various UN agencies, making data more accessible and AI-ready. Google demonstrated potential applications of the platform, such as using AI to generate comprehensive reports and analyses from UN statistics.
