Indonesia Lifts Ban on xAI's Grok Amid Ongoing Concerns

In a significant development, Indonesia has decided to lift the ban on xAI's chatbot Grok, joining Malaysia and the Philippines in this move. The bans were originally put in place due to Grok's involvement in generating approximately 1.8 million nonconsensual, sexualized images, including those of real women and minors, as reported by The New York Times and the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

  • Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced the lifting of the ban after X, a subsidiary of xAI, reportedly provided assurances and a detailed action plan to improve services and safeguard against misuse.
  • The ban lift is described as "conditional," with a warning that it could be reinstated if any further violations surface, according to Alexander Sabar, the ministry’s director general of digital space monitoring.
  • Malaysia and the Philippines had already lifted their bans on January 23.
