OpenAI Retires Controversial GPT-4o Model Amid Legal Concerns and Backlash

Starting Friday, OpenAI will cease providing access to five legacy ChatGPT models, notably including the GPT-4o model, which despite its popularity, became controversial due to its involvement in various lawsuits. These legal challenges arose from incidents related to user self-harm, delusional behavior, and a phenomenon termed AI psychosis. The GPT-4o model was also criticized for its level of sycophancy, described as a 'dark pattern' by experts.

• In addition to GPT-4o, other models like GPT-5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini are also set to be deprecated.
• OpenAI initially planned to retire GPT-4o in August with the introduction of GPT-5, but backlash from users led the company to keep the model available for paid subscribers. Currently, only 0.1% of OpenAI's users, equating to 800,000 individuals, still use GPT-4o.
• Despite the low percentage of active GPT-4o users, many of them have formed close connections with the model, prompting thousands to oppose its retirement.
