Google has expanded its Canvas in AI Mode feature to all users in the U.S. in English, following its initial release as part of Google Labs experiments. This tool aims to assist users in organizing, planning projects, and conducting deeper research. Key functionalities include:

  • Drafting Documents: Users can create custom tools within Google Search, enhancing the productivity for various tasks.
  • Project Planning: Canvas can build study guides, turn research reports into web pages, quizzes, or audio overviews.
  • Coding and App Development: Users can describe an idea and watch as Canvas generates code for apps or games.
  • Writing Enhancement: It offers feedback for refining creative writing drafts.

Canvas is integrated with Gemini, where Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers have access to the advanced Gemini 3 model. By making it available in AI Mode, Google plans to leverage its extensive reach through Google Search to place the tool in front of billions. In comparison, rival tools like OpenAI and Anthropic offer similar functionalities, but Google's tool requires more direct interaction, unlike the auto-triggered ChatGPT's Canvas. Users can activate Canvas via the tool menu (+) in AI Mode, allowing idea transformation through interaction with Gemini.
