Google Maps Unveils AI-Powered Features for Enhanced Navigation Experience

Google has announced significant updates to its Google Maps app, introducing a Gemini-powered conversational feature known as “Ask Maps” and an upgraded “Immersive Navigation” system.

  • Ask Maps allows users to ask complex, real-world questions using natural language. For example, it can answer questions like where to charge a phone without waiting in a long coffee line, or locate a public tennis court with lights.
  • The feature also facilitates trip planning by giving directions, estimated times of arrival (ETAs), and tips from users, like hidden trails or free tickets. It personalizes answers based on users' past searches and preferences.
  • Currently, Ask Maps is available on Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, with a desktop version coming soon.
  • The Immersive Navigation update adds a 3D view showing nearby buildings, road details like lanes and traffic lights, and more. It aims to improve the user's driving experience with natural voice guidance and real-time disruption alerts.
