View original source

Wirestock has transitioned from a stock photography service into a data provider for AI labs. The company, having shifted its focus in 2023, supplies comprehensive datasets including images, videos, design assets, and 3D content.

  • Development and Transition: Initially assisting photographers in selling their work, Wirestock now empowers artists and designers to contribute to data collection for AI, amassing over 700,000 contributors. Transparency in this shift allowed for opt-outs, yet many artists chose to participate, according to CEO Mikayel Khachatryan.
  • Funding and Growth: With a recent Series A funding round securing $23 million, led by Nava Ventures and supported by notable entities such as SBVP, Wirestock plans to expand its data supply business. The company boasts a revenue run-rate of $40 million and has compensated its contributors $15 million thus far.
  • Operational Changes: The transition necessitated retraining teams for data annotation and building sales and enterprise units to cater to large-scale AI labs. Today, Wirestock employs 60 people and leverages email marketing and referral programs to attract contributors.
  • Market Demand: The demand for data in AI labs is intense, with competitors like Scale AI setting high industry standards. Wirestock focuses on creative data for image and video AI models while exploring audio and music data.
  • Industry Insight: Investors, like Freddie Martignetti of Nava Ventures, emphasize the importance of multimodal data in developing human-like AI systems, underscoring Wirestock's role in advancing this frontier.
