Google Unveils Fake Call Detection to Combat AI Deepfake Scams

View original source

Google announced on Tuesday a new fake call detection feature in its Phone by Google app, targeting the rise of AI deepfake impersonation scams. This feature, initially available globally on Android 12+ devices, starts with Pixel devices this month.

  • Scammers' New Tactics: As people avoid calls from unknown numbers, scammers mimic trusted contacts using AI-generated voices to imitate family or authority figures.
  • Feature Functionality: The feature operates automatically, using a "digital handshake" between devices to verify call legitimacy. If a call from a trusted contact is spoofed, the device will flag it, prompting you to hang up.
  • This technology leverages Rich Communication Services (RCS), opening potential adoption by other apps and companies.

Beyond this update, Google introduced new features for Android:

  • A Google Photos feature allowing virtual outfit trials, launching soon in the U.S., India, and Brazil.
  • Google Play Books introduced a "Catch me up" function for recaps and interactive questions about highlighted passages.
  • A "Circle to Search" enhancement allows comprehensive outfit searches rather than individual item lookups.
