Amazon Amplifies AI and Cloud Investments in India, Seeks Market Expansion
View original sourceAmazon, on Thursday, announced a fresh investment of $13 billion to expand its AI and cloud infrastructure in India by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to the booming Indian tech landscape. This follows a meeting between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The investment will specifically target the expansion of Amazon Web Services' data center capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

This marks Amazon's third major financial commitment to India in recent years, after previous announcements of $15 billion in 2023 and an upcoming $35 billion by the end of 2025, bringing the total pledged investment to $48 billion.

The announcement aligns with a trend among global tech giants like Microsoft and Google, who are also investing heavily in India to create a hub for AI infrastructure and data centers.

India is attracting these investments by providing policy incentives such as zero tax benefits on certain services for foreign cloud providers, which has spurred local and international players such as Reliance Industries and Adani Group to increase their stakes in AI and cloud technologies.

Apart from cloud investments, Amazon is also expanding its retail and logistics network in India by opening more than 20 fulfillment centers and over 100 last-mile delivery stations. The company plans to enlarge its Amazon Now service to over 300 cities, aiming to outperform competitors such as Flipkart, Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto in the quick-commerce space.
