TIDAL Takes a Stand Against AI-Generated Music with New Policy
View original sourceMusic streaming service TIDAL has announced a new policy aimed at limiting the monetization of AI-generated music on its platform. The policy, effective from July 15, 2026, includes the following key points:
- AI-generated music will be identified and tagged with an “AI” badge, but these tracks won't be able to monetize or collect royalties.
- Fully AI-generated tracks are excluded from direct-to-fan sales.
- The policy addresses the growing concern among artists and subscribers who prefer organic creativity and feel bombarded by AI-generated content.
Tony Gervino, TIDAL's EVP and editor-in-chief, emphasized that the move isn't against technology but protects artists' creativity.
The company joins the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and Qobuz, which have also implemented measures to manage AI-generated music. For instance:
- Spotify labels AI music and filters spam.
- Apple Music uses transparency tags.
- Deezer is more aggressive in removing AI music from recommendations.
Gervino stated that AI's dominance in music is not inevitable if proactive measures are taken. TIDAL considers this policy a “living document” that can evolve over time.
