OpenAI Ventures into Hardware with Codex Micro and Faces Legal Action from Apple

View original source

OpenAI has taken a significant step into the hardware market with the launch of a $230 light-up keyboard, the Codex Micro, co-designed with specialty designer Work Louder. Aimed to enhance the use of its AI coding assistant, Codex, this limited-run collaboration features:

  • Light-up “Agent Keys” to display agent status
  • Customizable Command Keys for frequent Codex actions
  • A joystick for launching workflows
  • A dial controlling the agent reasoning level for task management

OpenAI describes this piece as more of a novelty rather than a product intended for mass consumption, signaling the company's initial foray into hardware. The Codex Micro allows better management and a stylish setup for ChatGPT users.

More substantial is a second, unreleased device: a screenless smart speaker with moving mechanical parts reported by Bloomberg. Yet to be fully explained or completed, this device hints at greater intent and development involvement by OpenAI with former Apple engineers, adding to its credibility. However, this connection has attracted controversy as Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of utilizing confidential information in its hardware development. OpenAI has denied any such accusations.

These moves underscore OpenAI's ambitious plans in hardware markets while navigating a complex legal landscape against a major technology player.
